Managing Suicide Risk with Teenagers and their Families

Presented by Jessica Tappana, MSW, LCSW
3.0 Clock Hours
**Meets 2.0 hour suicide prevention training and education requirement for licensure and renewal of licensure in Missouri**

Working with a suicidal client of any age can feel overwhelming. When a teenager has expressed that they feel suicidal, there is the additional challenge of helping the parents navigate the situation. As social workers, we are often doing a lot more than simply assessing risk. We may be educating parents, validating the teenager, connecting them to resources and encouraging communication between the adolescent and their parent. This training will give you tools to help you the next time you are asked to assist a suicidal adolescent and their family members.

Educational Objectives:
1. Learn to use one tool to confidently assess suicidal risk.
2. Examine common family dynamics and suggestions for talking to parents and caregivers who either under or over react to a suicidal teenager.
3. Increase confidence in the practitioner's ability to create and help a family implement a safety plan.
4. Discuss situations where hospital commitment may be necessary.
