Starting October 1st, Missouri will enforce the Trump administration's eligibility rules and “Healthy SNAP Initiatives” at the behest of Gov. Mike Kehoe. SNAP is federally funded and has been providing food supply assistance to communities in Missouri. The “big beautiful” bill will restrict government funding for SNAP, change eligibility requirements, and limit what food can be purchased. This new rule will exclude all non-citizens, including refugees and immigrants, from eligibility for assistance.
With the new regulations in place, families will be restricted to using their SNAP benefits for “Healthy” food only. This may have a beneficial effect on the health of SNAP users, but also will restrict their access to food. One struggle for Missouri will be deciding what is “healthy”. If each SNAP supplier has their own opinion of healthy, chaos may ensue.
Alongside SNAP, a new program named SuN Bucks will be created. The Missouri Independent states, “SuN Bucks issues a one-time $120 benefit per eligible child onto a debit card to help families buy groceries while school is out. Some children who qualify for the program might not be automatically enrolled. Applications for those kids to receive benefits are open through Aug. 31.”
The decrease in eligibility for SNAP recipients impacts immigrants and refugees, who are already experiencing poverty at higher rates in our country and state, and the implementation of these new restrictions will only add to the strain in their lives.
It is important to be aware of the resources in your community and to advocate for people whose benefits have been cut. While specific details remain unclear, it is important to stay informed about changes to SNAP assistance in your community so you can continue to be a useful resource and advocate.
