Renewing a License

  • You can renew your license 24/7/365 through MOPRO.
  • All licenses must be renewed before or on the expiration of the license.
  • Under Rule Amendment 20 CSR 2263-2.085 licenses that have been expired or revoked for two or more years cannot be renewed. If this happens, the individual must reapply for licensure as if they were starting over.
  • If the license is expired, you are not allowed to perform any duties or services that legally require a license.
  • A complete renewal form must be submitted to the committee. Examples include required information include:
    • Your current residential address.
    • Whether you have ever been found guilty, pled guilty, been placed on probation, or entered a plea of nolo contendere (no contest) for any state or federal law violation, excluding traffic violations.
    • Any addiction to or repeated abuse of substances, including alcohol.
    • Whether you are currently in treatment or have ever attended a rehabilitation program
    • Any involvement in a civil lawsuit.
    • Any unethical behavior or unprofessional conduct.
    • Details about any professional license, certification, registration, permit, or application that has been denied, suspended, restricted, revoked, voluntarily surrendered, or disciplined in any way in any country or region.
    • Any pending complaints before agencies or licensing boards.
    • Any medical conditions that may impair or limit your ability to perform the duties of a Licensed Social Worker.
    • Confirmation that you have completed the required 30 hours of Continuing Education (CE) and met ethical CE standards.
  • Licensees are responsible for keeping CE documentation for up to 4 years after renewal. Acceptable documentation may include:
    • Certificates or affidavits from the program or sponsor.
    • Receipts for fees paid to the sponsor.
    • Educational transcripts.
    • Written verification from a university practicum instructor confirming that you supervised undergraduate or graduate students.
    • A copy of a publication and a letter from the editor or publisher
    • A written announcement, schedule, or brochure identifying you as the presenter of a course, seminar, or program.

Restoring a License

  • · If your license has expired for 60 days or less, you must submit:
    • A complete renewal form.
    • Proof of approved Continuing Education (CE) hours.
    • Payment of the renewal fee.
    • Payment of the delinquency fee.
  • · If a license has been expired more than 60 days but less than 2 years, it can be restored by submitting:
    • A complete renewal form.
    • Proof of completing the required 30 CE hours.
    • Payment of the renewal fee and the restoration fee.
    • Proof of CE hours completed during the current renewal cycle.

Inactive License Status

  • Inactive status must be requested in writing, and an inactive license must be renewed every two years (biennially).
  • You are still required to renew your inactive license, and the renewal must be postmarked by the expiration date to avoid penalties.
  • You are not permitted to practice social work while your license is inactive, and you must identify yourself as inactive (for example: LMSW (inactive)), unless otherwise specified by the committee.
  • To return to active status, you must:
    • Submit a renewal form and pay the renewal fee.
    • Complete 30 Continuing Education (CE) hours within 1 year of reactivation OR provide proof that you completed 30 CE hours within the past 2 years.
    • If your license has been inactive for 5 or more years, and you have not completed 60 CE hours within the last 5 years, you must retake and pass the licensing exam to return to active status.
